LLM Traffic: visits from AI assistants in GA4

Measure the GA4 sessions sent by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and other AI assistants, by assistant, referrer, page and country.

LLM Traffic isolates the GA4 sessions that AI assistants sent to the site: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and others. It shows what share of all sessions they make up, which assistants and referrer domains sent them, the pages they landed on, and whether those visitors engaged and converted. It works from the GA4 data you already collect, so there is nothing to install.

Which sessions count

A session is counted as LLM traffic when any one of these is true:

  • its source is a known assistant's host or a subdomain of it (see the table below), or exactly one of the assistant names used as a source tag, such as chatgpt, perplexity or claude;
  • GA4 placed it in its own AI Assistant channel;
  • its medium is ai-assistant, which GA4 sets when the referrer is on Google's list of AI assistants (Default channel group).

The assistants AutoPSEO recognises by source:

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are not in it

Visits from Google's own AI features arrive as Google organic search. GA4 counts them under Organic Search, not AI Assistant (Default channel group), and Search Console reports them within the Web search type of its Performance report (AI features and your website). You find them in the Search Console reports and in google / organic, not here.

What the report shows

  • Twelve cards: Share of All Sessions, LLM Sessions, Active Users, Total Users, New Users, Page Views, Engagement Rate, Avg. Session Duration, Bounce Rate, Events, Key Events, and Assistants Sending Traffic, the number of named assistants with at least one session.
  • A trend chart with two views. By source stacks the six assistants with the most sessions, plus "Other assistants". Combined draws the exact daily total of LLM sessions, with key events on a second axis.
  • Tables: LLM Sources (sessions per assistant and its % of LLM), Referrer Domains (each host with the assistant it belongs to), Landing Pages, Pages, Error Pages from LLM Traffic, Countries, Devices and Events.

The By source view is an estimate

GA4 returns the daily totals and the per-assistant totals as separate reports, so the stacked view divides each day's LLM sessions between assistants by their share of the whole period. The daily totals are exact; how one day splits between assistants is not. Switch to Combined when you need exact daily figures.

Why the assistant tables can add up to less than the cards

A session in GA4's AI Assistant channel whose source is not in the table above still counts in the cards. The LLM Sources and Referrer Domains tables only show sessions they can put under a named assistant.

Error pages reached from AI answers

An assistant can link to an address that does not exist on your site. The Error Pages from LLM Traffic table applies the page title filters saved on Error Pages to these sessions, and stays empty until you save some.

Putting it to use

  • Track the trend, not the day. Read Share of All Sessions month by month; with small numbers, single days swing a lot.
  • See what assistants send people to. Landing Pages lists the pages that assistants link visitors to. Pages that appear often are worth keeping accurate and current.
  • Compare visitor quality. Hold this report's Engagement Rate and Key Events against the Organic Search row of Channels.
  • Narrow the segment if needed. GA4 filters apply on top of the LLM rule, so a custom source / medium list such as chatgpt.com / referral limits the whole report to that one source.
