On-Page SEO Check: keywords in titles, meta descriptions and H1s

Crawl your top pages and check whether the searches each one wins appear in its title, meta description and H1, with suggested rewrites for every gap.

The On-Page SEO Check matches the searches your pages already earn impressions for against the three places a searcher and Google read first: the title tag, the meta description and the H1. It fetches the live pages, flags every search that is missing from one of them, and proposes a rewrite. Because each search is assigned to a single page, it does not nag you about branded terms on every URL that happens to rank for them.

How a run works

  1. Pick the queries. AutoPSEO takes query-by-page rows from the last 28 days. A query qualifies when it has at least the Min impressions/month you chose: 50, 100 (default), 500, 1,000 or a custom number.
  2. Assign each query to one page. The query goes to the URL that earned the most clicks for it, with impressions breaking ties.
  3. Pick the pages. Pages are ranked by the impressions of the queries assigned to them; the Top 25 (default), Top 50 or Top 100 are checked, each with up to 10 of its biggest queries.
  4. Crawl. The pages are fetched by AutoPSEO-Bot in batches of 10, five at a time, with an 8-second timeout and the first megabyte of HTML read. Fetched pages are cached for 24 hours; tick Fresh crawl (skip 24h cache) after you edit a page.
  5. Check. For each query and page, AutoPSEO tests the title, the meta description and the first H1.

A progress bar shows the crawl and Stop ends it early; the pages finished so far are kept. Your last five runs stay available under Recent runs for 30 days.

When a keyword counts as present

Matching is forgiving about form but strict about words. The query is lower-cased and stripped of accents, and every word of three or more characters must appear somewhere in the element. Word order does not matter and a word may sit inside a longer one, so "suede shoe cleaning" is found in "Cleaning Suede Shoes: A Step-by-Step Guide". Words of one or two letters, such as "to" or "of", are ignored unless the query has nothing longer, but three-letter words such as "for" and "the" still have to appear.

Read the results

The cards count Total Pages Analyzed, Issues Found and the queries Missing from Title, Missing from Meta and Missing from H1. The table lists each page and query with impressions, clicks and position, a found or missing mark for each element, and a Warnings column for problems with the page itself:

  • Missing title, or a title longer than 60 or shorter than 30 characters.
  • Missing meta description, or one longer than 155 or shorter than 70 characters.
  • Missing H1, or more than one H1.
  • A robots meta tag containing noindex.
  • A page that could not be crawled (error status, not HTML, timeout).

Tabs narrow the table to one kind of gap or to crawl errors. Details shows the current title, description and H1 next to the suggestions, and the CSV export includes them all.

Use the suggestions with judgement

The suggestions are templates: for the title, the query in title case followed by the brand part of your current title or your domain (kept within 60 characters); for the meta description, the query followed by the rest of your current description (within 155); for the H1, the query joined to your current heading. They show where the words could go, not finished copy. Rewrite for the reader, keep one clear topic per page, and prefer the query that matters most over squeezing in all ten. Google may still write its own title link or snippet when it judges the page's own text a poor match.

Check a single page

Enter an address under Single URL and press Check URL to test one page against its own top 10 queries of the last 28 days, by impressions. It is the quickest way to confirm an edit. The Content Decay Map links here from every row.

If pages fail to crawl

If many rows show crawl errors, your firewall or CDN may be blocking the crawler. Allow the user agent AutoPSEO-Bot/1.0; the bot's page explains what it fetches.

How AutoPSEO helps

Articles written by the content engine are checked before they are saved: the validator requires a title within your site's width limit and a meta description, and warns when the description falls outside the length range your format sets, so new pages start without these gaps (how articles are written).
