What is the difference between clicks and impressions?

Performance Reports & Data

An impression means a link to your site appeared in a Google result someone was looking at. A click means they followed a link from Google to your site. A click needs an impression first, so impressions are normally by far the larger number. The gap between them tells you whether people who see you choose you, which is why the two often move in different directions.

What counts as an impression

Google's rule is that a link counts when it appears on the current page of results, even if the user never scrolls down to it, as long as no click is needed to reveal it. The exceptions are where the work is:

  • Page two and beyond count only if the user opens that page.
  • Carousels count an item only once it is scrolled into view inside the carousel.
  • "People also ask" and other expandable blocks count a link only when the user expands the block.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode follow the standard rules: a link shown in the answer earns an impression.
  • Images count once per host page; on the image search tab they need to scroll into view.
  • Discover counts a card once it scrolls into view, once per session.

Scrolling away and back during the same search does not add a second impression.

What counts as a click

  • Following any link that takes the user from Google to a page outside Google: a blue link, a link inside an AI Overview or AI Mode answer, a link inside an expanded "People also ask" answer, a Discover card.
  • Not counted: expanding a block, refining the query, or anything else that keeps the user on Google.
  • Coming back and clicking the same result again counts once; clicking a different link of yours counts separately.

Why impressions rise while clicks do not

What you seeUsual explanation
Impressions up, clicks flat, position worseYou started ranking, low down, for many new queries. Often the early sign of growing coverage.
Impressions up, clicks flat, position steadyYour result sits next to more that answers the query on the page itself, such as an AI Overview, or your snippet lost its appeal.
Impressions flat, clicks downLower click-through on the same visibility: check titles, rich results and what changed on the results page.
Both down togetherLost rankings or less demand. Compare with the same period last year to tell the two apart.

Two counting effects also bend the comparison. Search Console groups impressions differently by view: in the chart, several of your pages in one result count as a single impression for the property, but in the Pages table each page gets its own. And rare queries are left out of query-level rows, so the queries table rarely adds up to the total at the top. Read totals from the chart, and use the tables to find out where the movement came from.

How AutoPSEO helps

AutoPSEO's Property Sampling report measures how much of your clicks and impressions the query and page tables leave out, so you know how far to trust a query-level conclusion. The CTR Benchmark then turns the gap between impressions and clicks into a list: it builds an expected click-through rate for each position from your own data and ranks the queries and pages that get fewer clicks than their position should bring.
