Using AutoPSEO in Slack

What AutoPSEO's Slack messages contain, how Send to Slack posts any report table to a channel, and what you can and cannot do from Slack itself.

Any report → Send to Slack3 min read

In Slack you read AutoPSEO; you do not operate it from there. Scheduled reports and alerts arrive as formatted messages with an Open report button back to the app, and any report page can push the table you are looking at into a channel with Send to Slack. Rules are created, paused and muted in AutoPSEO, because an incoming webhook only carries messages one way.

What a message looks like

Messages use Slack's Block Kit layout. From top to bottom:

  1. Header: the report type or detector and the property, without any sc-domain: prefix. An alert's header starts with a marker for its severity.
  2. Summary: one sentence with the date window and the main change.
  3. Fields: up to ten labelled figures. A report shows clicks, impressions, CTR and average position with their change; an alert shows the metric, current value, baseline, window and change.
  4. Table: up to ten rows in a fixed-width block, in reports and report summaries.
  5. Footer: the property, the severity for alerts, and the time the message was sent in UTC.
  6. Open report: a button to the matching report in AutoPSEO.

The figures in a message are a snapshot. The report behind the button opens with its usual date range, so its totals can differ from the message's window.

Send any report to Slack

Most report pages have a Send to Slack button, a paper-plane icon in the toolbar. Despite the name it posts to any channel you have added, Teams and webhooks included.

  1. Let the page's table finish loading. Clicking earlier only brings a reminder to wait.
  2. Click Send to Slack. The dialog lists your channels; if you have none yet, it offers Set up a channel.
  3. Choose the channel and, if you like, add a note of up to 300 characters, such as what you want the team to look at.
  4. Check the preview of the first rows, then click Send now.

The message carries the page title and property, the date range shown on the page, up to eight of the page's summary cards, and the first ten rows and first six visible columns of the main table, sorted and filtered the way you left it. Its Open report link reopens the page with the same filters and dates. A webhook receives it with the event type report_summary.

See what each Slack channel receives

On Slack, Teams & Webhooks, the Slack - Subscriptions table lists every Slack channel you added, with each scheduled report and alert that posts there, its schedule and whether it is active or paused. A channel with nothing attached says Nothing posts here yet, which makes unused entries easy to spot and delete.

What happens in Slack, and what does not

  • Replies, reactions and threads stay in Slack. AutoPSEO does not read the channel.
  • Deleting a message in Slack changes nothing in AutoPSEO, and the next scheduled message still arrives.
  • There is no slash command and no button that acknowledges or mutes an alert. To quieten a rule, set Mute until on it or pause it (Alerts).
  • To stop a channel receiving anything, pause its rules or delete the channel entry (Connecting Slack).
  • To change what a report contains, edit the schedule in the app (Scheduled reports).

Sharing beyond the channel

A Slack message suits people who are already in the channel. For a client or colleague without a login, a share link gives them a snapshot of a report, and an export gives you the table as a file to send on.
