Can I use Google Search Console for keyword research?
Performance Reports & Data
Yes, with one limit: Search Console only shows searches your site already appears for. The Performance report lists those queries with real clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, which makes it the most reliable source for quick wins and for topics you half-cover. It gives no search volume for terms you do not rank for and nothing about competitors, so pair it with a research tool when you explore new ground.
What does Search Console tell you about keywords?
The Queries tab of the Performance report shows every search that displayed your site, apart from rare ones hidden for privacy, with:
- Impressions: how often your result was shown for that search.
- Clicks and CTR: how often it was chosen.
- Average position: where your highest result usually sat.
You can narrow it to one page, country, device or search type, compare two periods, and look back 16 months. Two limits matter for research. Impressions are not search volume: they count only searches where your result appeared. And Google's performance data deep dive explains that the interface shows at most 1,000 rows, while the API goes up to 50,000 rows per day per site and search type, so big sites see more through the API.
Five ways to find keyword opportunities
- Striking distance. Queries where you sit around positions 8 to 20 with plenty of impressions. A better section, title or internal link can lift them onto page one; see the striking-distance playbook.
- Shown often, rarely clicked. High impressions and a CTR well below your usual for that position point to a title or snippet problem; see What is a good CTR?.
- Questions. Filter for queries containing words like "how", "what" or "why". Each is a question someone typed, and often a section or an article you could write.
- The wrong page ranking. Filter by query and switch to the Pages tab. If your home page or a loosely related post ranks for a specific topic, a dedicated page can serve that search better.
- Rising queries. Compare the last 28 days with the 28 before and sort by impression change to catch demand as it appears.
When two of your pages swap places for the same query, you may have keyword cannibalisation rather than an opportunity; check before you write a third page.
What Search Console cannot do for keyword research
- Show volume for searches you do not appear for yet.
- Show which keywords competitors rank for.
- Rate how hard a keyword is to rank for.
For those you need a keyword research tool. The two work best together: research tools find new territory, and Search Console tells you how you really perform once you are there.
How AutoPSEO helps
AutoPSEO's Queries report carries comparisons and filters across reports, and Query Analysis separates conventional keywords from conversational, AI-shaped queries. On sites where it is switched on, the content engine runs the "wrong page ranking" method for you every day: a query with at least 20 impressions in 28 days, where you show at position 4 or worse and no page of yours is about it, becomes a topic candidate, ranked by the clicks a strong page could win, then checked against your existing pages before anything is written (how topics are found). Keyword research with search volumes is available on research credits for new ground.
