How do I connect Google Search Console to Looker Studio?
Performance Reports & Data
Use Google's own Search Console connector, which is free. In Looker Studio, create a data source, choose the Search Console connector, pick your site, choose a table (Site Impression or URL Impression) and a default search type, then click Connect. Sign in with a Google account that has at least view access to the property. Google's documentation now calls the product Data Studio again; the connector works the same under either name.
Connecting step by step
- Sign in to Looker Studio with the Google account you use for Search Console.
- Click Create, then Data source, and select the Search Console connector. Authorise it if you're asked to.
- In Sites, pick the property. In Tables, choose Site Impression or URL Impression. In Search type, choose the default type.
- Click Connect. The list of fields appears and the data source is ready to use in a report.
- To use both tables, create a second data source and add it to the same report: each data source holds only one table.
Site Impression or URL Impression?
| Site Impression | URL Impression | |
|---|---|---|
| Totals counted | for the property as a whole | page by page |
| Search types | Web, Image, Video, News | the same four, plus Discover and Google News |
| Good for | site-wide trend lines | landing-page tables and page-level charts |
Because the two tables aggregate differently, their totals won't agree with each other, and the site-level one is the closer match to Search Console's chart totals (Google's connector guide).
Why the numbers differ from Search Console
- Privacy filtering. Rare queries are withheld. In the connector they can show up as a single row with an empty Query value; add a filter that excludes null queries if you don't want that row.
- Aggregation. A page-level total credits every page of yours that appeared in a search, while the property-level total counts your site once per search.
- Search type. The data source's default type may not be the one selected in the Search Console view you're comparing against.
- Recent days. Search Console's newest data is preliminary and can still change, so a report refreshed tomorrow may show slightly different figures for the last few days.
Working within the limits
- The connector reads Search Console live, so it can't reach further back than Search Console keeps (16 months). For a longer archive, turn on the bulk data export to BigQuery and point Looker Studio at those tables.
- The connector has a search type parameter that you can expose as a drop-down control, so viewers can switch between Web, Image and the other types on one page instead of you building a copy for each.
How AutoPSEO helps
Some analyses take several blended data sources to build in Looker Studio. AutoPSEO works them out from the same Search Console rows: a blended Search Console and GA4 view that joins pages to GA4 landing pages, content groups that roll pages up into sections you define with rules or regex, and CSV export from the tables when you still want the numbers in a spreadsheet.
