How does Google Search Console compare to Ahrefs?

Google Search Console vs Other Tools

They answer different questions. Search Console is Google's own record of how your verified site performs in Google Search: measured clicks, impressions and positions, plus indexing and crawl data nobody outside Google can see. Ahrefs is a commercial SEO suite built on its own crawler and data, so it can estimate rankings, traffic and backlinks for any domain, including your competitors'. Search Console tells you the truth about your site; Ahrefs shows you the market around it.

What only Search Console can tell you

  • Exact clicks, impressions, CTR and average position from Google, with appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode included in the counts.
  • Whether Google has indexed a page, which canonical it chose and why it left a page out.
  • Manual actions and security issues affecting your site.
  • All of it free, for every site you can verify.

What Ahrefs adds

  • Estimated rankings and traffic for competitors.
  • Keyword research beyond the queries you already appear for.
  • Backlink research on any domain from its own index.
  • A free tier, now called Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools), which on 12 October 2026 offered verified sites Site Explorer, Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per project per month, and Web Analytics (ahrefs.com). Paid plans and their current prices are on Ahrefs' pricing page.

Why the numbers never match

  • Ahrefs' traffic and positions are modelled estimates; Search Console reports what happened in Google.
  • The keyword sets differ: Search Console includes long-tail queries a third-party database may never track, while Ahrefs includes keywords you have never appeared for.
  • Link counts differ because each tool sees the web through its own crawler and keeps its own sample.

Use Search Console's figures whenever you report on your own site, and Ahrefs' when you need a view of sites you don't control.

How AutoPSEO helps

AutoPSEO brings both kinds of data into one workspace. Your Search Console, GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools figures sit next to research tools for keywords, search results, backlinks, rank tracking and site audits, which draw on DataForSEO and are metered against the monthly research allowance included in each plan. Its content engine then writes articles for the searches your own data says you should win.

Put your SEO content on autopilot

Connect Search Console and your site. AutoPSEO scans it and plans the first topics right away. No credit card needed.
