How do I set up Google Search Console for Shopify?
Getting Started
Add your store to Search Console, verify it, then submit sitemap.xml, which Shopify generates for you. The quickest verification is the HTML tag: create a URL-prefix property, copy its meta tag and paste it into your theme's theme.liquid file just below the opening <head> tag. For a Domain property that covers every subdomain and protocol, add Search Console's TXT record to your domain's DNS instead.
Option 1: URL-prefix property with the HTML tag
- In Search Console, choose Add property, then URL prefix, and enter your store's primary address exactly as customers see it, for example
https://www.yourstore.com/. - Choose the HTML tag method and copy the meta tag.
- In Shopify admin, open Online Store > Themes and edit the code of your live theme.
- Open
theme.liquidand paste the tag on its own line directly below<head>. If you verify several domains, give each its own line. - Save, then choose Verify in Search Console.
The tag lives in the theme. If you publish a different theme later, copy the tag across, or the verification will lapse when Google rechecks it.
Option 2: Domain property with a DNS record
A Domain property gathers www, the bare domain and any other subdomain in one place, which suits stores that have moved domains or run several. Choose Domain when adding the property and copy the TXT record. If Shopify manages your domain, add it as a TXT record in the domain's DNS settings in Shopify admin (Settings > Domains); if your domain is registered elsewhere, add it there. The full walkthrough is in DNS verification.
Submit the sitemap
Shopify publishes a sitemap at the root of your domain, https://yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. It links to separate sitemaps for products, collections, blog posts and pages, and includes each product's main image.
- In Search Console, open Indexing > Sitemaps.
- Enter
sitemap.xmlunder Add a new sitemap and submit. - If you sell through international domains, each domain has its own sitemap: submit each in its own property.
Your store must be open to the public: Shopify notes that the sitemap cannot be read while a store is set to private.
What to check in the first weeks
- Indexing > Pages: product and collection pages should move into Indexed. A long list of duplicates usually means several URLs show the same product; check which one Google chose as canonical.
- URL Inspection: test one product, one collection and one blog post to confirm Googlebot sees the full content.
- Performance: once data arrives, usually within a few days, compare product queries with collection queries to see which page types win searches.
How AutoPSEO helps
Once the store is verified, sign in to AutoPSEO with the same Google account and the property appears.
