How does Google Search Console compare to Semrush?
Google Search Console vs Other Tools
They answer different questions, so the fair comparison is about fit, not winners. Search Console is Google's free, first-party record of your own verified site: real clicks and impressions, index status and problems Google found. Semrush is a paid research suite that estimates rankings, traffic, keywords and backlinks for any domain, competitors included, from its own databases. Search Console is the more accurate source for your site; Semrush sees further than your site.
Side by side
| Google Search Console | Semrush | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Paid subscription |
| Where the data comes from | Google's own search data | Results pages collected through third parties, a panel of real users, and Semrush's own link crawler |
| Sites you can see | Only properties you verified or were added to | Any domain |
| Clicks and impressions | Measured; rare queries hidden for privacy | Estimated traffic |
| Search volume for a keyword | Not provided | Provided |
| Backlinks | Links report, which Google says is not a complete list | Semrush's own backlink index |
| Index status and Google's diagnostics | URL Inspection, Page indexing, manual actions, security issues | Not available: no outside tool can see Google's index decisions |
| Actions you can take with Google | Submit sitemaps, request indexing, removals, disavow file | None directly |
Semrush describes its methods in its knowledge base article on data sources: keyword data from results pages collected through third-party providers, traffic estimates modelled from a clickstream panel, and backlinks from its proprietary crawler.
Where is Search Console stronger?
- Accuracy for your own site. Its clicks and impressions are Google's count, not a model. When the two tools disagree about your traffic, believe Search Console.
- Queries you would never have thought to check. It lists searches you already appear for, including long and unusual ones a keyword database may not hold.
- Google's own verdicts. Only Search Console can tell you whether a page is indexed, which canonical Google chose, or whether a manual action applies.
- Price. It costs nothing, as do its API and its BigQuery export (Google Cloud storage and query charges aside).
Where is Semrush stronger?
- Competitors. You can see estimated rankings and traffic for sites you do not own.
- Keywords you do not rank for yet. Search volumes and related terms help you plan content before Google shows you anywhere.
- Link research beyond your own site. Its index covers other domains' backlinks too.
- Your data in one place. Several Semrush tools can connect to Search Console; Organic Traffic Insights, for example, pulls in your impressions and positions.
Which should you use?
If you run one site on a tight budget, start with Search Console and add a paid research tool when you need competitor or keyword-volume data. If you manage many sites or compete in crowded markets, you will likely use both: Search Console for what is true about your site, a research suite for what is happening around it. Avoid comparing a research tool's traffic estimate with Search Console's clicks and expecting a match. One is a model and the other a count.
How AutoPSEO helps
AutoPSEO starts from your own Search Console data, adds GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools, and puts research on top: keyword metrics, live results pages, backlinks and rank tracking from DataForSEO, metered against a monthly credit allowance that comes with each plan, plus a site audit crawler (features, pricing). Its content engine then turns the searches you already appear for into new articles, which is the step a research suite leaves to you. For another comparison, see Google Search Console vs Ahrefs.
