How do I request indexing for a specific URL?

Submitting & Indexing

Paste the full URL into the inspection bar at the top of Search Console, wait for the result, run Test live URL if you have just changed the page, then click Request indexing. You need owner or full-user permission on the property. The request puts the URL in Google's crawl queue; crawling can still take from a few days to a few weeks, and Google doesn't promise to index the page at all.

Step by step

  1. Open the property that contains the URL. The inspection bar only accepts URLs from the property you have open.
  2. Paste the full address, including https://, and press Enter.
  3. If you have just published or fixed the page, click Test live URL and make sure Google can fetch it, isn't blocked by robots.txt and finds no noindex.
  4. Click Request indexing.
  5. Leave it there. Google says that asking again for the same URL won't get it crawled any faster (Ask Google to recrawl your URLs).

Limits to plan around

  • A daily quota. Google says there is one for individual requests but doesn't publish the number, so save requests for pages that matter.
  • One URL at a time. For many URLs, submit or resubmit a sitemap instead (submitting a sitemap).
  • No guarantee. A request asks for a crawl; whether the page is indexed depends on what Google finds.

When requesting indexing won't help

If the page carries noindex, is blocked by robots.txt, points its canonical elsewhere or looks like a soft 404, a fresh crawl only confirms the problem. Check the reason in the URL Inspection result or the Page indexing report and fix it first. Request indexing not working goes through the common cases.

Other search engines

Google's tool only affects Google. Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep take part in IndexNow, a protocol for telling search engines a URL has changed; Google isn't among its participants, so IndexNow pings don't reach Google Search.

How AutoPSEO helps

AutoPSEO can send changed URLs to IndexNow for you once your key file is on the site (IndexNow), and the content engine can ping IndexNow for the articles it publishes and updates. For Google, add new or fixed pages to the Index Tracker: it inspects them daily and alerts you when a page becomes indexed, or later drops out, so you don't have to keep checking by hand.
