What can I submit to Google Search Console, and how?

Submitting & Indexing

Search Console is not a directory you submit a site to. You claim a property, and after that there are six separate things you can submit, each in a different place and each with a different effect.

The six submissions

  • A property. Add and verify the site so Search Console starts reporting on it. Covered in setting up Search Console.
  • A sitemap. Indexing > Sitemaps, paste the full sitemap URL. This is the scalable way to tell Google which URLs exist and when they changed. See submitting a sitemap.
  • An individual URL. The URL Inspection bar, then Request indexing. One page at a time, with a daily quota. See submitting a URL.
  • A removal request. Indexing > Removals temporarily hides a URL of yours from results for around six months while you apply a permanent fix. See removing a URL.
  • A change of address. Settings > Change of address, when a whole site moves to a new domain. See the change of address tool.
  • A disavow file. Submitted through the separate disavow tool, and only for genuinely harmful links. See disavowing links.

To that list you can add a reconsideration request, which is not really a submission of content but of an explanation, and only appears when a manual action exists. See manual actions.

What submitting does not do

None of these force indexing. A sitemap and an indexing request are both discovery hints: Google still decides whether a URL is worth crawling and then whether it is worth indexing. A page that is blocked in robots.txt, carries a noindex tag or canonicalises to another URL will not be indexed no matter how often you submit it.

Tip: if you find yourself requesting indexing for more than a handful of URLs, the answer is a correct sitemap with accurate lastmod values, not more requests. Bulk requests do not move a URL up any queue.

How AutoPSEO helps

AutoPSEO can register sitemaps and run bulk URL inspections against the same property, and can push changed URLs to Bing, Yandex and Naver through IndexNow. See Sitemaps and URL Inspection.
