How to use ChatGPT for SEO: tasks, live Search Console data, prompts and limits

ChatGPT handles SEO work that is reading, analysing and writing: summarising Search Console exports, grouping queries, and drafting briefs, titles and structured data. Without an upload or a connected app it cannot see your own data, so give it exports or connect a Search Console server, and verify every number and claim before you publish.

Key takeaways

  • Without an upload or a connected app, ChatGPT cannot see your Search Console data.
  • OpenAI lists custom MCP apps for Business, Enterprise and Edu on the web; Pro users get read and fetch tools.
  • OpenAI says ChatGPT can sound confident even when it is wrong, so verify every number and quote.
  • When ChatGPT analyses an upload with Python, read the code: a correct sum of the wrong thing still misleads.
  • OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.

What SEO work can ChatGPT handle?

ChatGPT is most useful for the parts of SEO that are reading, analysing and writing. Depending on your plan, three of its tools matter most for search work:

  • Data analysis. Upload a spreadsheet or CSV and ChatGPT can describe trends and outliers, build tables and charts, and run Python for the calculations, which turns a Search Console export into a grouped, sorted answer.
  • Search and deep research. Search looks up current information on the web and cites it; deep research builds multi-source, cited answers. Both suit questions about a topic or a market, not your own site's numbers.
  • Writing. Briefs, title and meta description options, FAQ answers, outlines, and first drafts of structured data or redirect rules.

The same tasks work in other assistants, and the guide to Claude for SEO covers Claude's version, including work inside a site's code. What none of them can do on their own is see your data: without it, an answer to "why did my traffic drop?" is a list of common causes, not a diagnosis.

What can ChatGPT do with a Search Console export?

Uploading an export is the quickest way to give ChatGPT your numbers, and it needs no setup. OpenAI recommends structured files with clear column headers in the first row and one record per row, which is what Search Console exports already look like. For many analyses, ChatGPT then writes and runs Python on the file.

Three limits shape what you can conclude:

  • The export is partial. The Search Console interface exports at most 1,000 rows, and its query tables leave out anonymised queries, those issued by too few people. Query rows will not add up to the chart totals, and the long tail is cut off.
  • The analysis sees only the file. The Python environment cannot make web requests or API calls, so it cannot fetch fresh data halfway through an answer.
  • The method is ChatGPT's choice. OpenAI asks you to review the generated code, outputs and assumptions before relying on a result, and to name the method, grouping or columns you want when it matters.

Exports work well for a quarterly review or a one-off question. For anything you ask every week, a connection saves the exporting, and one that reads the Search Console API is not held to the interface's 1,000 rows.

How do you connect ChatGPT to live Search Console data?

ChatGPT reaches outside services through connected apps, which come packaged in plugins. OpenAI's help centre describes the setup like this.

  • Installing. Open Settings, then Plugins, choose the plugin or app, install it and connect your account if asked.
  • Using. Mention the app with @ in your message, or choose it from the + menu.
  • Permissions. App permission settings decide when ChatGPT asks before reading information or taking an action, from Always ask to Allow all actions. They change when ChatGPT asks, never what the app can reach.
  • Your own MCP server. A Search Console server that is not in the directory is added as a custom MCP app in developer mode. OpenAI lists this for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces on ChatGPT web, with Pro users limited to read and fetch tools. MCP apps are web only, and ChatGPT connects only to remote servers.

Deep research can use custom apps for read and fetch actions, so it can set your Search Console figures beside what it finds on the web; agent mode does not use custom apps. Read-only access covers almost every SEO question, so there is rarely a reason to grant more. The guide to SEO agents explains what an MCP server does, and the guide to connecting Search Console to ChatGPT walks through one setup from start to finish.

Which prompts work for SEO in ChatGPT?

Good prompts name the data, the comparison, the threshold and the form of the answer. A few that hold up:

  • With an upload: "This is a Search Console export of queries for the last three months. Group the queries by topic, then list the groups with the most impressions where the average position is between 8 and 20. Weight averages by impressions and show the Python you used."
  • With two exports: "Compare these two quarters by page. Which pages lost the most clicks, and which of their queries explain the loss?"
  • With a connected app: "For my top 50 pages by impressions, list the ones whose click-through rate fell by more than a third against the previous 28 days, with the dates you compared."
  • For writing: "Here is my page and the 20 queries it gets. Write three title and meta description pairs that match the main query and promise nothing the page does not deliver."
  • For structured data: "Write Product JSON-LD for this page using only these fields. Leave out any property you have no value for."

Picture a content editor at a recipe site who uploads last quarter's export and asks for queries in positions 8 to 20 with high impressions. ChatGPT groups them into a dozen topics and shows its code, and she notices it averaged position across queries without weighting by impressions. She asks it to weight the average, the order of the list changes, and only then does she pick the three pages to improve.

What are ChatGPT's limits for SEO work?

If you have seen ChatGPT cite a study that does not exist, you already know why its SEO output needs checking. This section lists the limits that matter for search work and how to work around each one.

  • Confident errors. OpenAI's help centre says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading output and may sound confident even when it is wrong, including fabricated quotes and citations. Verify every figure, quote and source before it reaches a client or a page.
  • Old knowledge. Models are trained on data up to a cutoff and know nothing later unless a tool fetches it. Advice about Google's features or policies needs a current source.
  • Pages it cannot read. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT may fail to read a site because of technical issues, paywalls or robots.txt preferences, so a review of competing pages can rest on less than you think.
  • Publishing. Google says it is critical to manually fact-check and review all AI-generated content before publishing, and the same review applies to titles, meta descriptions and structured data.
  • Servers you have not vetted. OpenAI says custom MCP servers are not developed or verified by OpenAI, and that connecting untrusted servers increases exposure to risks such as prompt injection. Connect only servers you trust.

Where AutoPSEO fits

AutoPSEO's ChatGPT app turns its dashboard reports into tools ChatGPT can call: decaying pages, striking-distance keywords, cannibalisation and period comparisons, for the properties your account can see. You create an API key in AutoPSEO and add AutoPSEO as a connector in ChatGPT; keys are read-only by default and can be revoked. The ChatGPT app page shows what it answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT SEO the same as ranking in ChatGPT search?

No. Using ChatGPT for SEO work is a different job from appearing in its answers. For the second, OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features and that sites which opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so check that your robots.txt does not block it.

Can ChatGPT check where my pages rank?

Not on its own. Its search finds and cites pages; it does not report your position in Google. Positions come from Search Console, connected or exported, or from a rank tracker that checks a fixed list of searches.

Does OpenAI train on the data my connected apps return?

It depends on your plan. OpenAI says that for Free, Plus, Go and Pro users it may use information accessed from apps to train its models if the setting to improve the model for everyone is on, and that for Business, Enterprise and Edu it does not by default.

Can ChatGPT write SEO content that ranks?

It can write drafts, and whether a page ranks depends on whether it helps the people searching. Google's guidance says AI-generated content must meet the same Search Essentials and spam policies as any other, that generating many pages without adding value may break its scaled content abuse policy, and that AI content should be fact-checked and reviewed before publishing.

Can ChatGPT make changes to my site?

Only through an app that offers write actions. OpenAI lists full MCP support, including write actions, as a beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, and app permissions decide when ChatGPT asks first. For anything that changes a live site, keep it asking every time.

Should you use ChatGPT or Claude for SEO?

Either handles the reading, analysis and writing. The practical differences are how each connects to your data on your plan, and whether you need to work inside your site's code. Use the assistant your team already works in, and connect it to the same Search Console data.
